In addition to holding national accreditation, California Coast University is also approved through the State of California to operate as an educational institution. Because the protection of California citizenry is a goal paramount to the State, the Department of Consumer Affairs has both a vision to empower California consumers and a mission to “…protect California consumers by providing a safe and fair marketplace through oversight, enforcement, and licensure of professions.” With this in mind, and under the watch of the Department, private postsecondary educational institutions such as California Coast University are required to seek approval and then be monitored by the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) to ensure quality educational programming is delivered to students.
To do this, the BPPE protects students and consumers by establishing regulations and then conducting on-going reviews of educational programs and operating standards, proactively combating unlicensed activity, impartially resolving student and consumer complaints, and conducting outreach to ensure institutions meet those requirements. To assist educational institutions, the Bureau promotes and implements licensing standards by conducting workshops; approving or denying applications; establishing and enforcing minimum standards for instructional quality and institutional stability. In addition, the Bureau also approves and monitors accreditation plans while establishing and enforcing minimum standards for ethical business practices. All of these while keeping in mind their vision “to be the national leader in regulating private postsecondary institutions and maximizing Californians’ confidence that institutions approved by the Bureau provide a quality education.”
With this in mind, it is with great pride that California Coast University was first approved by the BPPE in 1982. In 2020, the University submitted an Application for Renewal of Approval to Operate an Accredited Institution. After reviewing the University’s Application, CCU is happy to report the BPPE notified the University of its most recent renewal in February of 2021 – granting approval until January of 2025!
