Study Guides California Coast University has developed comprehensive Study Guides for each course designed to coordinate and sequence the learning materials for the student. Study Guides are based on specific college level textbooks, which may be obtained from local bookstores, the publisher, or the University’s lending library which is available by telephone, fax, e-mail or online via Coast Connection. Study Guides are organized in such a way that students receive a complete syllabus for each course along with instructional materials which guide you chapter by chapter through the corresponding textbook. The syllabus, included with each Study Guide, clearly indicates the course goals and learning objectives for the course. Thus the student knows the objective he/she is expected to meet and the faculty can evaluate the level to which each objective has been met based on test scores. Each Study Guide contains an overview and summary of each textbook chapter, along with a listing of important keywords (with definitions) and self tests (with answers) on key points. All items are referenced back to specific learning objectives for the chapter, which allow the student to easily understand concepts or theories presented in that particular chapter. Students completing a Study Guide will find that by following the instructions, the materials will virtually walk them through the textbook. Self- tests allow the student to test his/her own retention and other exercise along the way help the student identify potential areas requiring additional reading. Unit Tests are found approximately every 5 chapters depending, upon the length and complexity of the materials. Unit Tests and essay questions are taken as open book examinations and are returned to the University for grading. Each Study Guide concludes with a Final Examination along with a brief writing assignment which summarizes the learning objectives and educational experience. All tests are un-timed and may be completed as open book tests. |
