Students who do not qualify for federal financial aid, or who need additional funds beyond what federal financial aid can provide, have an option of applying for a Sallie MaeŽ Private Educational Loan.

Sallie MaeŽ Private Educational Loans are not guaranteed and can take several weeks to be processed. Sallie MaeŽ has a separate application procedure and sets its own criteria for loan approval. You may be required to apply with a co-borrower and most lenders will require a credit check and/or an income-to-debt ratio on the borrower and/or co-borrower.

You may apply for a Sallie MaeŽ Private Educational Loan online by following the instructions below.

  • Interest only payments You can choose to just pay interest for the length of your schooling. This makes in school payments as low as $30.


  • Co-borrower release option! Make your first 24 payments on time and you may apply to have the co-borrower released from the loan completely.


  • Save on interest! SLM will disburse your tuition directly to the school in increments, which means you save. Interest does not accrue on money we have not disbursed.



SLM Web Application Instructions

  1. Submit the Application for Admissions and undergo the standard admissions process. This will allow you to find out how many transfer units, standardized exam or specialized training credit you may receive. This may reduce the cost of your program. Once you find out how much your program costs, you may apply for a Sallie Mae Private Educational Loan.


  2. Log on to www.slmfinancial.com


  3. Click on "SLM Educational Loans." Then click on "apply now" under Career Training Loans. Next click on "begin loan application" and then select the state your school resides in. Once you choose a state you can select your school from the drop down box. You will need your 6-digit school code to continue.


  4. Complete the online loan application and submit it for credit processing (approximate time for completion = 10 minutes)


  5. Within 30 seconds, you will receive a web response.


  6. If the loan is approved, SLM Financial will email the following to you (the school) for the borrowers signature:

    • Disclosure Statement

    • Promissory Note

    • Pre-filled Loan Application


  7. After certifying the loan documents (including the electronic application) and obtaining the borrower's signature, you will send to SLM the following:

    • All Loan Documents

    • Borrower's Recent Pay stub

    • Borrower's Signed ID
