![]() Instructional Process How do the programs work? During the admissions process, all components of an applicant's background are thoroughly reviewed and evaluated against the University's course work requirements. The assessment allows the University to determine which course have already been satisfied, which courses a student may be eligible to Challenge, which courses may require the assignment of a Study Guide, and for undergraduate students which courses students may submit a request for Experiential Learning credit or be eligible for Specialized Training credit. The results of this assessment are plotted on a course work matrix enabling an applicant to easily visualize exactly how all of the parts of their background compare and can be utilized in completing the academic puzzle. The University's programs have been designed to help the student fill in the missing pieces and meet his or her educational goal. More information on how the programs work may be found by following this link: How the Programs Work What is a Study Guide? California Coast University has developed comprehensive Study Guides for each course designed to coordinate and sequence the learning materials for the student. Study Guides are based on specific college level textbooks and are organized in such a way that students receive a complete syllabus for each course along with instructional materials which guides the student chapter by chapter through the corresponding textbook. More details can be found on completing Study Guides by following this link: Study Guides How long does it take to complete a Study Guide? The course and degree programs offered by California Coast University have been designed to allow students to proceed as rapidly or as slowly as their own time and ability permit. While there is no minimum length of time, students are required to complete at least 2 courses per year. What if I do not do well on an examination? Undergraduates who fail a course must repeat the course and earn a passing grade on the Study Guide. Undergraduate students who earn a grade of D will have the option of repeating the course examination, one time at no additional charge in order to raise their grade point average. Graduate students who earn D's or F's must repeat the course and earn a passing grade on the Study Guide. Graduate students who earn a C as a final grade in the course will have the option of repeating the course, one time at no additional charge in order to raise their grade point average. Complete information on retaking courses or examinations may be found by following this link: Repeating exams What if I earn a passing grade, but I want to improve it? Undergraduate students who earn a grade of B or C (B for graduate students) may repeat an examination to improve their grade. This is called the Second Grade Option; the fee for this is $250.00. How long will it take for me to find out my grade on an examination? The University uses a computerized grading system, and examinations are processed on a daily basis. After your examination is scored, your grade slip can be e-mailed to you, or we can send it via the US post office. Can I get feedback on any test or examination items I may have missed? Yes. After each exam is graded, the student receives a grade slip identifying the letter grade received on that test, a total of how many questions were answered wrong and a listing of specific questions that were answered incorrectly identified by item number. By referring back to the Study Guide and/or examination the student can easily identify not only the chapter from where the test question was formulated, but also the corresponding learning objective for that specific test item. Armed with these tools the student can then research the question and identify the correct answer. What is a Challenge Examination? A Challenge Examination allows a student to challenge a course by completing a multiple choice examination covering the content of the entire course, similar to a Final Examination. A detailed explanation of Challenge Examinations may be found by following this link: Challenge Examination How long does it take to complete a degree program? The degree programs offered by California Coast University have been designed to allow students to begin at any time and proceed as rapidly or as slowly as their own time and ability permit. No two students personal situations or backgrounds are the same, consequently it is not possible to predetermine how long it might take a student to complete a degree program. While the University cannot allow students to graduate in less than one academic year (9 months), it is not unrealistic (depending upon circumstances) for a student to achieve that goal. Students are required to complete a minimum of 2 courses per year, and are required to complete, their program of study 5 years from the date of enrollment, unless the Registrars Office has issued an extension. Is there a Thesis Requirement? Master's Degree Students have the option of developing a Thesis or they may substitute three additional graduate level courses in their major to fulfill these requirements. I require some help and guidance with certain aspects of my academic work, where can I go? If you have a question about coursework, CCU Faculty can be contacted via phone, email, or fax. If the faculty member cannot be contacted immediately because you contacted the University during non-operating hours, a faculty member will return your message in a timely fashion.
