Experiential Learning

Experiential Credit is available to undergraduate students only.

The University recognizes that not all learning takes place in a traditional classroom and students are given an opportunity to receive academic credit for two different types of non school learning Specialized Training and Experiential Learning.

The process used for validating Experiential Learning allows students to receive up to 30 Semester Units of credit for Experiential Learning using the validating procedure shown below.

Experiential credits may be earned only in the major field of study (core courses) and only at the undergraduate level.

Eligibility for experiential credits is determined at the application stage of the enrollment process. The application and supporting documentation is reviewed by the Chief Academic Officer and an objective determination is made as to which, if any, courses the applicant may have obtained sufficient experiential knowledge and skills that would be deemed equivalent to those of standard courses.

The student is provided with a coursework completion matrix at the time of acceptance into his/her degree program. Based upon review of the occupational resume submitted with the application, the matrix identifies any courses that may be eligible for Experiential Credit.

Once the applicant has officially enrolled and become a student, he/she is provided a "Request for Experiential Credit" form for each course identified as possibly eligible for Experiential Credit.

The "Request for Experiential Credit" forms give the student an opportunity to provide a more succinct and detailed explanation of any specific occupational experience or expertise he/she may have that is directly related to a particular course(s). The applicant must then list and describe an inventory of completed seminars, lectures, military schools, government or company sponsored training programs, and any other formal learning experiences which may be relevant to that course. Utilizing guidelines and reference materials published by internationally recognized sources, such as The National Guide to Educational Credit for Training Programs, The Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services, and The Guidelines of the Council for the Advancement of Experiential Learning ,academic credit may be awarded for relevant work experience, company training programs, military schools, workshops, seminars, specialized training programs, correspondence courses, continuing education courses, etc.

The Dean, Associate Dean, or appropriate member of the faculty reviews the completed Request for Experiential Credit forms and relevant support documentation to determine whether to award full credit for a course.

If the student has successfully documented equivalent experience to a standard course, credit is awarded.

If there does not appear to be sufficient information or background to warrant full course credit, the student may be given an opportunity to complete a Challenge Examination for the course.

A student may appeal the Committee's decision by writing a letter to the Dean and providing additional information or documentation for consideration. The Dean’s decision will be final.
