Undergraduate Course Descriptions for the Associate of Science in Psychology Degree Program ![]() PSY 102 INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY 3 Semester Units A study of the methods and findings of contemporary psychology. Includes a survey of human behavior, sensory process, human development, perception, learning, motivation and emotion, personality, adjustment, abnormal behavior, therapy and social interaction. PSY 220 DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY 3 Semester Units The story of human development is an exciting portrayal of life in the process of becoming. From conception to death, the drama unfolds, revealing an ever more complex being in the making. The aim of this course is not to adopt and present one theory of development. Rather, it is to reflect an eclectic point of view that recognizes the wide variety of theories that can contribute to the total picture of human development, and selects the most important ideas from those numerous theoretical positions. PSY 280 MARRIAGE AND FAMILY 3 Semester Units Presents a representative summary of the literature of family therapy and the complex and changing social unit known as the family. Contemporary theories and issues in marriage and family therapy are presented. PSY 380 PERSONALITY THEORIES 3 Semester Units This course provides an overview of major classic and current Personality Theories, integrating clear explanation of theory with the latest research. It features an up-to-date evaluation of the scientific status of theoretical assertions and related currently important research topics, and illustrates theories through the interpretation of illustrative biographies. It conveys the positive value of various theories, preparing students to apply theoretical ideas to understanding particular individuals they may encounter in their professional work and personal lives. PSY 408 ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY 3 Semester Units An eclectic, multicultural approach to abnormal behavior, drawing on contributions from various disciplines and theoretical stances. Discussion of psychosocial and psychophysiological factors. Blends case vignettes and client's experience with research based explanations. PSY 418 COUNSELING PSYCHOLOGY 3 Semester Units This course encompasses all that counseling is today addressing the history of counseling and the theory behind its practice; exploring the multicultural, ethical, legal environments in which counselors operate; and examining the variety of skills today's counselors are expected to exhibit. ![]() GED 102 THE HUMAN BODY 3 Semester Units The Human Body in Health and Disease is an invitation to discover more about yourself and how your body works, both when it is healthy and when it is suffering from disease. It is intended for anyone interested in gaining a basic understanding of the human body, and seeing how that information can be used to diagnose and treat various diseases. GED 108 ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE 3 Semester Units This course is an interdisciplinary approach to environmental science, focusing on the interrelatedness of humans and the natural world. Historical perspectives, economic and political realities, varied social experience and ethnic backgrounds are integrated into the identification of major issues and the search for possible solutions. GED 120 INTRODUCTION TO THE HUMANITIES 3 Semester Units A survey course concerned with the conduct of human life. Emphasis is on understanding of the esthetic sense, an important element in the art of being human. Identification of the ideas of the great philosophers and of the unresolved philosophical questions. GED 130 INTRODUCTION TO CIVILIZATION 3 Semester Units Presentation of Western Civilization's major happenings. Review of where man has been, leading to a better understanding of where he is now. GED 132 UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT 3 Semester Units Examination of the institutions of the American political system, the Presidency, the Congress, and the Supreme Court, as well as political parties and the roles they have played in the development of the American polyarchy. GED 150 MATHEMATICS 3 Semester Units An introduction to the concepts and techniques of arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. GED 155 ENGLISH 3 Semester Units This course introduces the necessary writing, composition, grammar, and spelling skills needed for various careers in the 21" century. This comprehensive course provides the student with a firm grasp of what components are required to be a good writer. GED 215 PSYCHOLOGY OF ADJUSTMENT 3 Semester Units This course explores major perspectives on psychology and provides opportunities for students to apply useful concepts to their personal lives. Content is drawn from theory and research in different areas of psychology, and covers personality development, stress management, health issues, relationships, work, life span development, and other areas of life. GED 216 INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY 3 Semester Units Basic introduction to social problems; minority inequality; aging and death; women's rights; and urban problems in general. GED 230 U.S. HISTORY 3 Semester Units Survey of the political, social, economic and cultural development of the United States from discovery to the present. Attention given to the rise of the nation, sectional and national problems, disunion and reconstruction. ![]() GEL 205 MARKETING HOSPITALITY 3 Semester Units This course provides examples and applications that illustrate the auKor decisions hospitality marketing managers face in their efforts balance objectives and resources against needs and opportunities in today's global marketplace. An abundance of real world examp4r, and cases and experiential and internet exercises give students extraordinary insight into marketing situations they will actually encounter on the job. GEL 207 CONSUMER BEHAVIOR 3 Semester Units This course approaches the subject of consumer behavior by using a rigorous scientific orientation, basic concepts, persuasion, and managerial decision making. The course discusses the principles and scientific investigation of consumer behavior and demonstrates how companies and organizations use them strategically every day. GEL 222 HUMAN RELATIONS 3 Semester Units The dynamics of relationships between and among individuals, groups and organizations. Dynamics studies include authority, communication, conflict between systems, and synergy of systems. Emphasis is on identifying the role of behavioral science in the business world; the importance of understanding the individual; familiarity with such skills as communication, motivation, leadership and human relations training; the environment for human relations: contributions of human relations; and the special challenges in the practice of human relations. GEL 231 PERSONAL FINANCE 3 Semester Units Course covers the basic framework of personal finance with an emphasis on organizing and managing your financial resources. Also covers concepts of managing current assets, current liabilities, and long term liabilities. Introduces investment principles and ways to protect your wealth in the future. GEL 240 CHILD DEVELOPMENT 3 Semester Units Study of psychological development of the child from conception to adolescence. Development of motor behavior, language, social behavior, and intelligence. GEL 280 ADVERTISING 3 Semester Units A course for managers who will use advertising as a business tool. Covers social responsibility of advertising, corporate advertising, the consumer and behavior, quantitative approach to budgeting and computer assisted media selection models. GEL 305 SOCIAL GERONTOLOGY 3 Semester Units Provides a comprehensive and contemporary view of the sociology of aging, which takes a life courses approach, stipulating that the quality of one's life in old age is the product of earlier choices, opportunities and constraints. Current public policy issues pertaining to aging; and coverage of topics and issues pertaining to race, glass, gender, and culture are covered. GEL 314 CRIMINAL JUSTICE IN AMERICA 3 Semester Units Provides a broad overview of the Criminal Justice System in America. Topics include public policy and theories of crime, adult and juvenile justice systems, policing, criminal lawyers, the criminal courts system, sentencing and capital punishment. GEL 316 ANIMAL SCIENCE 3 Semester Units This course is an introduction to animal science that covers the full range of topics, traditional and non traditional, that reflect the way agriculture is changing today, and will prepare students for the modern agricultural workforce. It explores animal science from a variety of integrated perspectives, global, biological, species, industry, and society by examining not only the topics traditionally covered at the introductory level (e.g., major species, nutrition, digestion, feeds, genetics, reproduction, disease, and animal behavior), but also by exploring the dynamic nature of animal science and the many ways in which it is a piece of a much larger whole of agriculture. GGEL 350 INTRODUCTION TO HUMAN SEXUALITY 3 Semester Units An introduction to human sexuality covering sexual lifestyles, love, commercial sex, pornography, political issues and AIDS. GEL 370 DEATH AND DYING 3 Semester Units This course gives a comprehensive introduction to the main issues in contemporary thanatology. The study of death is by nature interdisciplinary, and includes contributions from medicine, the humanities, and the social sciences. Emphasis on cross cultural perspectives on death and the diversity of ethnic traditions in heterogenous modern societies. Grief, bereavement, funeral practices, suicide, attitudes about immortality and the afterlife, and near death experiences are also covered. GEL 420 ART HISTORY 3 Semester Units This course presents a chronologically structured survey of primarily Western art in which art and architecture are presented as expressions of the key values, insights, and aspirations of its makers, their patrons and the surrounding culture. The art of each period is discussed in relation to four dominant human concerns or themes found at all times in all cultures: Spirituality, The Self, Nature and The City. Art in parallel cultures is also considered. GEL 467 INTRODUCTION TO E-COMMERCE 3 Semester Units An overview of electronic commerce including market mechanisms, retailing, business to business, E-government and E-learning, strategies, payments and order fulfillments, as well as law, ethics and cyber crimes. GEL 477 BUSINESS ETHICS 3 Semester Units Provides a managerial framework for integrating ethics into strategic business decisions. The framework provides an overview of the concepts, processes and best practices associated with successful business ethics programs. Prepares students for the ethical dilemmas they will face in their business careers. |
