Education Benefits and Financial Aid

VA tutorial Assistance

VA tutorial assistance is available to students who are receiving education benefits under Chapter 30, 35 or 1606, and who are enrolled at least half time. A maximum amount of $100 per month is available.

To apply for tutorial assistance do the following:

Complete VA form 22-1990t.
Select a tutor who is not a relative.
Provide proof that the tutor is qualified. (Such as a letter of recommendation from a professor).

Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty (Chapter 30)


The Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) is a federally funded program administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for educational development of service members. Service members eligible for Chapter 30 contribute $100 a month for 12 months into the program. This money is nonrefundable. Upon meeting eligibility requirements, service members may receive up to $1,004 a month in education support for 36 months. Payments are prorated for part-time study.

The monthly benefit paid to you is based on the type of training you take, length of your service, your category, and if DOD put extra money in your MGIB Fund (called "kickers"). You usually have 10 years to use your MGIB benefits, but the time limit can be less, in some cases, and longer under certain circumstances. Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606)


The Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR) program may be available to you if you are a member of the Selected Reserve. The Selected Reserve includes the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and Coast Guard Reserve, and the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. You may be entitled to receive up to 36 months of education benefits. Your benefit entitlement ends 10 years from the date of your eligibility for the program, or on the day you leave the Selected Reserve.

Your unit will give you DD Form 2384-1, Notice of Basic Eligibility, when you become eligible for the program. Your unit will also code your eligibility into the Department of Defense personnel system so that VA may verify your eligibility. Montgomery GI Bill Kicker


You may also be eligible to receive additional benefits through the Montgomery GI Bill Kicker program. This program applies only to specific units or Military Occupational Specialties (MOSs). The Kicker program is considered an incentive and soldiers must meet the eligibility requirements and sign a valid Kicker contract in order to qualify. Consult your state MGIB manager or education officer to determine eligibility and application procedures, or visit the Army National Guard web site for more information.

VEAP (Chapter 32)


The Veterans Education Assistance Program (VEAP) is available if you first entered active duty between January 1, 1977 and June 30, 1985 and you elected to make contributions from your military pay to participate in this education benefit program. DEA (Chapter 35)


Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance Program (DEA) provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-related condition, or who died while on active duty or as a result of a service related condition. Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Services


Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Service provides vocational-educational counseling to veterans and certain dependents. Eligibility for this service is based on having eligibility for a VA education program such as: Chapter 30 (Montgomery GI Bill); Chapter 32 (Veterans Education Assistance Program - VEAP); Chapter 35 (Dependents Education Assistance Program) for certain spouses and dependent children; Chapter 18 (Spina Bifida Program) for certain dependent children; Chapter 1606 (Reservists Education Program); or Public Law 102-16 (for Transitioning Service Members). Certification

If you are using Chapter 30, 33, 35, or 1606 benefits, the VA Certifying Official at CCU will electronically certify your enrollment status approximately 5 days after your courses end. This certification verifies the number of credits you are taking and how long it took to complete.
Dropped Courses

Students who drop courses may be required by VA to repay benefits received for that class.
Academic Credit Transcripts

California Coast University accepts transfer credit from accredited/approved academic institutions when the course content is deemed to be the equivalent to our own. For evaluation purposes student copies of transcript(s) are acceptable. Official transcripts must be on file at CCU before students can begin.

Note: VA does not pay for repeated course(s). Examples: Course(s) when credit may be awarded from another college; academic course credit(s) obtained through a military evaluation; academic credit(s) earned at technical school(s); or any other source where academic credit was granted.
